British Championships 2009

Wow – what a tournament!

Friday started off with the Night ‘Owlers in division 24. Kim, Moll, Bailey, Stripe, Sam and Buffy stormed their way to victory by winning every single leg they raced. I boxloaded for the team, and have to say they looked very professional and deserved the win. Our judge even commented on it! Well done guys.

Friday evening followed a night of NEON in the marquee, pics on facebook! Yes, check out those sunglasses…not that I could see in them at all, and yes, they were stolen off poor Sarah!

Saturday was the Hawk ‘Owlers turn to race in division 18. Lucy, Chip, Buddy, Skye and Dylan finally got to run a sub20 time by doing 19.98s and several very close (20.04, 20.12). Unfortunately lights in early races meant that races were lost that should really have been theirs. They did end up a commendable 3rd place with the fastest time in the division and I’m sure they will be back and fighting for it next year!

Saturday evening was another disco organised by the Mad Mutts. After Andrea’s music quiz at camp ‘Owler (my Led Zep revision earned team “Clueless” 2points lol!) I joined Nat and the Ballistics for another crazy night, most memorably to B.E.P.s with Sam and Nat. Reasonably early bedtime so as not to be too hungover in the morning.

Sunday saw the Barney ‘Owlers in division 7, eventually seeded second on the time of 18.69s that we ran at Middlesbrough, it looked set to be close racing. Our line up was Norah, Floss, Jet, George and they all ran their socks off. We managed an amazing time of 18.25s (with 0.26s on the lights! Wow!) and lots of sub 18.50s time, including an 18.44s where I had a good few feet on a change. In the end we WON the division, not dropping a single leg all day and winning every race! Three years in a row for little Jetly now, bless her.

More amazingly still, we won the Feelwells Team Challenge cup! Overall as a club we won 80% of races, that was more than any of the other 93 clubs entered, and to give you an idea – 2nd place only won 71%. So to say we were pleased was an understatement!

The best champs yet in my opinion! Was great to catch up with the people I don’t see too often but speak to all the time – Bristol, Flyers etc!

Finally, huge congrats to Anne and the Bassets Hotdogs, they won division 1 in style to become British Champions 2009. Also well done to High Flyers who fought right to the end to defend their title, and to Cleveland who took a fantastic 3rd in the division!
